Mardi Gras Roundtable Luncheon with Our Speaker: Sheriff Frank Denning

It’s that time of year again when we all get together for our Mardi Gras lunch on Fat Tuesday, February 16th, 2009. Rather than our usual meeting, we always meet for lunch at Gracious Promise on Fat Tuesday.  We will be serving:

  • Crawfish Etouffee
  • Jambalaya
  • Red Beans and Rice
  • Hot Boiled Corn & Potatoes
  • Salad
  • King Cake

Our speaker for this meeting will be Frank Denning, Johnson County Sheriff. Sheriff Denning has served in the law enforcement community for over 40 years. We are very excited to have him as our speaker. Go to http://frankforsheriff.com/ABOUT_FRANK.html for more information.

Invite a friend! We are not strict on RSVP’ing (as there should be plenty) but we’d love it if you’d let us know if you’re coming by Monday morning on the 15th… but PLEASE, if you do not R.S.V.P. and your schedule clears so that you could come… come and eat with us!

CSG Justice Center – Children of Incarcerated Parents: An Action Plan for Federal Policymakers

Posted under children & ex-offenders & partners

The Council of State Governments just released an interesting publication that recommends significant changes in policy that affect children of prisoners, such as taking a child’s location into account when sentencing a parent and other measures that promote visitation.

“When parents are incarcerated, the impact on their children can be devastating,” said advisory board co-chair and Michigan State Senator Alan Cropsey. “There is so much we can do—from arrest to reentry—that can reduce the trauma for children and help ensure that their needs, and those of their caregivers, are being met. At last, that information is captured in this plan.”

We believe strongly that policy changes are needed to reduce the negative impact that crime has on these children. We have participated with the CSG and have been featured in their publications in the past.

The press release is available for download here (PDF document) and the full document here (also a PDF document).

Annual Roundtable Mardi Gras Luncheon

Posted under partners

Hi Everyone,

It’s that time of year again when we all get together for our Mardi Gras lunch on Fat Tuesday, February 24, 2009.

Rather than our usual “third Friday” meeting, we always meet for lunch on Fat Tuesday. We’ll meet for the regular Round Table meeting time from 9:30 to 11:30.  Lunch will be served at 11:30.

For those of you that can’t attend the entire meeting, please feel free to drop by when you can.  Just let me know you are coming.

Directions:  Gracious Promise is located at 1021 Pacific Avenue- just a few blocks off I-70 and 18th Street in K.C.K.  There is a new shopping center called Prescott Plaza at 18th & Pacific, so as you  head northbound on 18th, simply drive once block past the shopping center entrance to the first street on your right called “Bunker”, turn right onto Bunker and head east  for one block, then turn right onto 16th Street at the stop sign which will then curl east back into Pacific Avenue.  Continue eastbound on Pacific for 8 blocks to 1021.  GPF is on the south side of the road in the large brick building (the former post office).

We will be serving the usual:

  • Jambalaya
  • Crawfish Ettoufee
  • Red Beans and Rice
  • Hot Boiled Corn and Potatoes

Then to top it off – - – we will have Marcy’s famous home baked cookies.  How much better can it get?

Roger Werholtz, Secretary of Kansas Department of Corrections, has agreed to visit that day as our special guest speaker – - so we are looking forward to a wonderful day.

Invite a friend, RSVP by Friday, February 20th, and we’ll have plenty for all of you.

Shirley  Miller, GPF Executive Director
